Join us for Boys & Girls Varsity Basketball Senior Night tonight, Friday, February 17th! Girls play at 5:30 PM and Boys play at 7:15 PM against Blair. This is also Community Night for surrounding schools and students from Churchill feeder schools get in free.
The girls varsity basketball team is having a great season, with a 17-4 record at the time of this writing. The three senior starters pictured have been a major part of the team’s success.
Alex Hacopian, left, has played on the girls varsity team all three years she’s been at Churchill. The senior captain is a dogged defender and sharp shooter who has been a huge contributor to the girls’ success this year. Alex plans to follow in her parents’ footsteps and attend the University of Maryland at College Park in the fall.
Nina Hazra, center, is a four year varsity player and two year captain. She is having a breakout season, averaging 12.3 points and 7 rebounds per game. A versatile three year starter who can play forward and center, she has always been a strong defender, but this year is having a great offensive season as well. She is really enjoying the chemistry the seniors have with one another on the court, as well as the talent and energy brought by the younger players.
Coco Kuchins, right, is a four year varsity player and two year captain as well. Coco is having a standout season; her current rankings in the DMV are: 25th for points per game, 11th for assists, 11th for blocks and 26th for free throws made (74.5%, 123-165). She is averaging 5.6 steals per game. She thoroughly enjoys playing with her teammates and always wants to see them succeed and grow as players. Coco is committed to play Division 1 basketball at the United States Air Force Academy next year.
These three go way back! Alex and Nina were in preschool together, and Coco and Nina have played basketball together since 7th grade at Hoover. We look forward to cheering them on at Senior Night, and wishing them well in their futures!
The Boys Varsity Team is 14-6 as of now in the regular season with tonight’s game remaining. The team is looking forward to the playoffs. Leventhal, Schultz and Njumbe are third-year varsity players and Williams, Robinson and Cavalier are second-year varsity players. Robinson will be attending Emory next year and the 5 others are still undecided. These seniors go way back as these boys have been playing basketball together since their elementary school years. They will be missed at Churchill next year as they begin the next chapter of their lives. Good luck to all!
